Capturing the Elegance of a Chinese Tea Ceremony in Calgary – A friendly guide to Tea Ceremonies from a Calgary photographer

A tea ceremony is a cherished tradition in many Asian cultures, including Chinese, Vietnamese, and Thai weddings. This meaningful ritual symbolizes respect, gratitude, and the merging of two families. During the ceremony, the couple serves tea to their elders, who, in turn, offer blessings, words of wisdom, and symbolic gifts such as red envelopes (lai see/ang bao) or heirloom jewelry. In modern times, the tea ceremony is often seen as an important moment of acceptance into the new family, strengthening the bond between generations. The intimate nature of the exchange makes it a deeply emotional and memorable part of many weddings.

My own personal tips for a Smooth and Meaningful Tea Ceremony

Being Chinese myself, I have attended a few tea ceremonies in my life, both as a guest and as a photographer. Planning a tea ceremony involves many details, so having a well-organized approach will help make it a seamless experience.

Here are some practical tips to help your tea ceremony run smoothly:

Assign Key Roles – Enlist the help of trusted family members or friends to manage different aspects of the ceremony. Having dedicated roles will ensure everything runs efficiently and stress-free.
Jewelry Assistance – If you are receiving heirloom jewelry during the ceremony, designate someone to help you put it on, as it can be difficult to manage on your own.
Pre-Pour the Tea – Assign one person to pour the tea slightly ahead of time to allow it to cool, preventing elders from burning their tongues. This also helps maintain a steady flow during the ceremony.
Document Gifts and Red Envelopes – Have someone take note of who gives you specific gifts, including red packets. A helpful method is to label each envelope with a corresponding number to keep track of monetary gifts for future thank-you notes.
Capture the Moment – Assign another person to take photos of each gift as it is received. Since professional wedding photos may take some time to be delivered, having a personal record allows you to send thank-you messages in a timely manner.
Prepare the Tea Set – Ensure you have a proper tea set, often including a traditional teapot and small teacups. The type of tea served varies by culture, with some families choosing symbolic teas such as jasmine, pu-erh, or oolong.
Dress Comfortably Yet Elegantly – Many couples wear traditional attire, such as a qipao/cheongsam for Chinese weddings or an áo dài for Vietnamese weddings. Be mindful of comfort, as you will be kneeling or bowing during the ceremony. A kneeling pillow/cushion would help immensely, the more relatives you are paying respect to, the longer the ceremony takes!

By preparing ahead of time and organizing key roles, you can create a meaningful and stress-free tea ceremony that honors tradition while celebrating your union with loved ones.

I hope these tips help you! Feel free to leave a comment if it does (:
