The Ultimate Guide to Eloping at Lake O’Hara
September 22, 2026
With idyllic views, turquoise alpine lakes, wildflower-filled meadows, towering peaks, and the kind of quiet that makes you forget your phone exists, Lake O’Hara might be your kind of place.
Tucked away in Yoho National Park in British Columbia, Lake O’Hara is one of the most beautiful and protected areas in the Canadian Rockies. It is also one of the more elusive places to visit, which is part of what makes a Lake O’Hara elopement feel so special.
There are no big crowds, sprawling parking lots, or rows of wedding venues here. Instead, you get alpine trails, crystal-clear lakes, dramatic mountain scenery, and plenty of space to slow down and actually enjoy your wedding day.
And yes, getting there takes a little planning. But for couples dreaming of an intimate Canadian Rockies elopement, that extra effort can be well worth it.

Where is Lake O’Hara?
Lake O’Hara is located in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, on the western side of the Canadian Rockies. (Alberta licenses are not applicable here)
About an hour drive from Lake Louise, making it a beautiful option for couples who want a mountain elopement surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in Alberta and British Columbia.
The area is known for its alpine lakes, rugged peaks, wildflower meadows, waterfalls, and beautifully maintained hiking trails.
The catch?
You can’t simply drive up to Lake O’Hara.
And honestly, that is part of the magic.
Getting to Lake O’Hara
Access to Lake O’Hara is intentionally limited in order to protect this incredibly delicate alpine environment. Private vehicles are not allowed access to the lake.
During the operating season, visitors generally access the area through the Parks Canada shuttle system, with reservations required. Shuttle reservations can be highly competitive, and the reservation process may involve a lottery or other booking procedures depending on the season.
If you don’t secure a shuttle reservation, hiking the approximately 11-kilometre access road is another option, although this adds a significant amount of time and effort to your wedding day.
For the most current information about shuttle reservations, operating dates, fees, and access restrictions, always check the official Parks Canada information before making your plans.
Pro tip: Don’t build your entire wedding timeline around getting a shuttle reservation until you’ve confirmed the current booking system and your access is secured.
Do you need a marriage licence to elope at Lake O’Hara?
Yes!
If you are legally getting married in British Columbia, you’ll need a British Columbia Marriage Licence and someone legally authorized to perform your marriage ceremony in BC.
You’ll also need two witnesses for the legal ceremony.
Your photographer cannot automatically double as your witness just because they’re already there holding a camera and looking suspiciously organized. Your witnesses need to meet the legal requirements set out by the province.
There are also important distinctions between having a legal wedding ceremony and having a symbolic or commitment ceremony.
If you’re travelling from outside British Columbia, or especially if you’re planning an international destination elopement, it’s worth understanding the marriage requirements well ahead of time.
What makes Lake O’Hara so special for an elopement?
It feels wonderfully removed from the rest of the world.
Lake O’Hara is one of those places where the landscape seems to get the final say.
The limited access means fewer visitors, quieter trails, and a much more intimate atmosphere than you might experience at some of the more easily accessible destinations in the Canadian Rockies.
Instead of spending your wedding day moving between a ceremony site, reception venue, hotel, and photo locations, your day can simply unfold outdoors.
You could exchange vows beside an alpine lake, wander through the trails together, stop for photographs among the mountains, have a picnic, explore a viewpoint, and spend the afternoon soaking in the landscape.
There is no need to rush from one thing to the next.
And that is exactly what makes an elopement an elopement.
Trails are pristine and brimming with life
Every corner of Lake’O’Hara seem teeming with life.
The area is famous for its network of alpine trails, including routes that take you around lakes, through meadows, and toward spectacular viewpoints overlooking the surrounding mountains.
The trails are beautifully maintained, and the landscape changes constantly as you move through the area.
One moment you’re walking beside a perfectly still alpine lake. A few minutes later, you’re surrounded by wildflowers, trees, rocky peaks, and waterfalls.
For couples, it means your wedding gallery can feel like an adventure rather than a collection of posed portraits.
Why Lake O’Hara is perfect for an intimate wedding
Lake O’Hara is particularly beautiful for couples who don’t want a traditional wedding day.
Maybe the idea of inviting 150 people to a ballroom makes you want to hide under a table.
Maybe you’d rather spend your wedding day hiking with your favourite person than making small talk with distant relatives.
Or maybe you simply want your wedding to feel peaceful, intentional, and completely yours.
Lake O’Hara lends itself beautifully to that kind of celebration.
With limited access to the area and restrictions designed to protect the environment, the atmosphere is naturally quiet and peaceful. Even music is limited, with acoustic instruments being the appropriate choice.
Imagine standing beside an alpine lake with your partner, hearing nothing but the wind through the trees and the sound of the mountains around you.
That is a pretty spectacular wedding soundtrack.
What could your Lake O’Hara elopement day look like?
Your day doesn’t have to be a quick ceremony followed by a few photos.
One of my favourite things about elopements is that you get to decide what the wedding day actually means to you.
A Lake O’Hara elopement could look something like:
Morning
Start slowly. Have breakfast together, get ready, and make your way toward Lake O’Hara.
Late morning
Explore the alpine circuit area, enjoy some quiet time before the ceremony.
Afternoon
Exchange vows somewhere meaningful to you, followed by portraits and a picnic lunch.
You can spend the afternoon hiking, exploring the surrounding trails, reading your vows to each other again, sharing a bottle of something celebratory where permitted, or simply sitting beside the lake and taking it all in.
Evening
Finish your day with golden-hour portraits and one last quiet moment together before heading back down.
And if you’re thinking, That sounds much more like us than a traditional wedding, you’re probably onto something.

When is the best time to elope at Lake O’Hara?
The Canadian Rockies have a very short alpine summer, and conditions can change quickly.
The best time for a Lake O’Hara elopement depends on what you’re hoping to experience.
Early summer can bring lingering snow and changing trail conditions, while later summer generally offers more reliable access to alpine trails and beautiful wildflower displays.
Late summer and early fall can bring cooler temperatures, changing foliage, and gorgeous mountain light.
However, weather in the Rockies is famously unpredictable. A sunny morning can turn into an afternoon of rain, and mountain conditions can change quickly.
That is why flexibility is your friend.
Your wedding outfit can handle a little weather.
Your photographer should be able to handle it too.

How many people can you bring?
Lake O’Hara is best suited to small, intimate celebrations.
If you’re planning a larger wedding, this may not be the right environment for you, particularly because access is limited and the area is carefully managed to protect the surrounding ecosystem. Guest numbers are limited to under 20.
For couples planning an elopement with just their partner, an officiant, witnesses, and perhaps a small handful of loved ones, however, the setting can be incredibly meaningful.
Always check the current Parks Canada regulations and restrictions when planning your ceremony, especially if you are bringing a group.
Leave no trace and respect the landscape
Lake O’Hara is beautiful precisely because it has been carefully protected.
If you’re planning an elopement here, you’re not just visiting a pretty backdrop. You’re stepping into a sensitive alpine environment.
That means following Parks Canada regulations, staying on designated trails, respecting wildlife, packing out what you bring in, and leaving flowers, plants, rocks, and other natural features exactly where you found them.
Your wedding should leave memories behind, not footprints.
And yes, this includes confetti.
As dreamy as a confetti toss looks in photographs, biodegradable or not, adding foreign materials to a protected alpine environment isn’t a great idea.
There are plenty of ways to celebrate without decorating the Rockies.
The Rockies already came with decorations.
What should you pack for a Lake O’Hara elopement?
Think wedding day meets mountain adventure.
You’ll want:
- Comfortable hiking shoes or boots
- Layers that can handle changing mountain weather
- A waterproof jacket
- Water and snacks
- Sunscreen and sunglasses
- Bug spray and Bear Spray
- A small emergency kit
- Your marriage licence and required documents
- Wedding attire that allows you to move comfortably
- Comfortable shoes for hiking between locations
- A small backpack
- Extra socks
- A camera or phone if you want a few behind-the-scenes moments
And please don’t underestimate the importance of comfortable footwear.
Your wedding shoes can be gorgeous.
They do not need to personally summit the Canadian Rockies.
How to make your Lake O’Hara elopement feel personal
The beauty of an elopement is that you can replace traditional wedding traditions with things that actually mean something to you.
Write private vows.
Bring a favourite book and read a passage to each other.
Exchange letters.
Have a picnic with your favourite foods.
Bring a small keepsake from home.
Listen to a playlist on headphones together.
Take a first dance somewhere quiet.
Or simply sit beside the lake for ten minutes with absolutely nothing scheduled.
There is something wonderfully rebellious about making space for stillness on a wedding day.
Planning a Lake O’Hara elopement with a photographer
Because access to Lake O’Hara is limited, working with a photographer who understands the area and the logistics of Canadian Rockies elopements can make a huge difference.
A good elopement photographer isn’t just there to take pretty pictures.
They can help you think through your timeline, transportation, hiking distance, lighting, weather, locations, permits and logistics while making sure the photography doesn’t take over your actual wedding day.
The goal isn’t to spend six hours being told where to stand.
The goal is to experience your wedding and have someone document it beautifully.
Is Lake O’Hara right for your elopement?
Lake O’Hara may be the perfect fit if you’re dreaming of:
- A quiet and intimate wedding
- Alpine lakes and dramatic mountain scenery
- Hiking and exploring together
- A small guest list
- A wedding day centred around the two of you
- An adventurous Canadian Rockies experience
- Beautiful, natural wedding photographs
- A slower wedding day without a packed itinerary
It may not be the best fit if you want easy vehicle access, a large guest list, elaborate decorations, amplified music, or a traditional reception with lots of moving parts.
Lake O’Hara asks you to keep things simple.
And honestly?
That’s one of the reasons it is so beautiful.
Ready to plan your Lake O’Hara elopement?
If you’re dreaming about exchanging vows somewhere surrounded by turquoise water, wildflowers, ancient forests, and towering Rocky Mountain peaks, Lake O’Hara is an unforgettable place to begin your next chapter together.
The logistics require some planning, but your wedding day doesn’t have to feel complicated.
You can hike.
You can laugh.
You can cry.
You can get a little muddy.
You can stop for photographs whenever the landscape takes your breath away.
And you can spend the day with the person you love, rather than spending the day trying to keep everyone else happy.
That sounds like a pretty wonderful way to get married.
